What to Do When Hearing Certain Computer Noises

There are many computer noises that can be heard. Sometimes these are a simple solution and other times they are indicators that there is a serious issue with your machine. Learn what some of the most common noises are and what to do about them.

One of the more common computer noises is a clicking CD-rom drive. These will always make a bit of noise especially when first putting in a CD. At times it will click and spin back and forth over and over. This means the drive is having a hard time reading the disk. Take the disk out and clean it. If this doesn't work, the drive itself may be failing and need to be replaced.

Another type of noise is your computer's fan. This is always going to make some noise regardless if you are using a desktop or a laptop. At times though it might become more noticeable and be turning on much more often than it used to. What is most likely happening is that the fan is covered in dust. Get a can of compressed air used for cleaning computers and dust out your fan vents with the computer unplugged. This will get rid of much of the dust and make is so the fan runs smoothly and possibly less often.

One of the more serious noises is one that comes from your hard drive. There will always be some noise associated with this part especially when it's scanning or searching for files. If you ever hear it start to click, this means that it could be dying. Immediately back up all your data right now regardless if you have heard this noise yet or not. If the drive does end up dying after having some issues, you won't lose any data with regular backups. You can simply replace the drive and reload your data if it eventually does fail.
